The annual Basler Fasnacht (Basel Carnival) takes place from February 19 to 21, 2024. Fasnacht is at the heart of Basel's cultural identity and creative power. For three days, from the Morgenstreich on Monday at 4 a.m. to the Endstreich on Thursday morning at 4 a.m., the city is in a state of emergency and chaos. The Basler Fasnacht has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.
Monday, February 19, 2024 - Cortège
The big parade, the Cortège, takes place in the afternoon of the first day of Fasnacht. Over 10,000 active carnival revellers present their motifs in formations of various sizes. Unlike the Morgenstreich, the cliques follow a fixed route through the city. After the Cortège disperses at dusk, Fasnacht continues in the alleyways of the old town.
