The very special city
Basler Fasnacht
Every year, on the Fasnacht Monday, the city of Basel transforms. At exactly 4:00 AM, the lights go out, and the haunting sound of piccolos and drums fills the air — it’s time for Morgestraich, the beginning of the Basler Fasnacht, Switzerland’s largest and most unique Carnival.
Over the course of 72 hours, masked cliques, illuminated lanterns, and swirling confetti turn Basel into a surreal dreamscape. It’s not just a celebration — it’s a deeply rooted cultural tradition, full of satire, symbolism, and unmistakable local pride.
Each image in this gallery is a tribute to the artistry, mystery, and vibrant energy of this extraordinary event.
