Last weekend (September 27, 2025) marked the 1st Global Foto Walk, an inspiring initiative organized by the Foto App, bringing photographers from around the world in 22 cities together to explore their cities through the lens. I had the pleasure and honor to host the Basel edition of this unique event.
We began our journey at Galerie Sechs, a creative hub in the heart of Basel, where twenty photographers gathered over tea and coffee. The friendly atmosphere was the perfect prologue to a day of discovery and photography.
Our first stop was the Spalentor, one of Basel's famous city gates. With its ornate façade and medieval charm, it provided a striking backdrop to explore architectural details and play with light and shadow.
From there, we moved on to the Botanic Garden, a quiet oasis that contrasted beautifully with the bustling streets. The textures of exotic plants, the play of light in the greenhouses, and candid scenes of visitors offered plenty of material for creative shots.
At Petersplatz, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant flea market. Here, the spirit of street photography came alive: colorful stands, curious objects, and the human stories of vendors and visitors created endless photographic opportunities.
The walk then led us to Basel Marktplatz, the city’s central square. The historic Town Hall with its red façade and murals stood out against the flow of everyday life, providing a perfect blend of architecture and street scenes.
We wrapped up at Unternehmen Mitte, Basel’s iconic café in a former bank building. It was the ideal place to exchange impressions, review photos, and celebrate the sense of community that made this walk so special.
Throughout the day, it became clear that the Foto Walk was more than just a chance to take pictures. It was about connection between people, places, and perspectives.
Photos from the Basel Foto Walk can be found both on Instagram and in the Foto App, showcasing the diversity of visions that twenty photographers brought to the same city.
For those who want to keep exploring Basel through photography, I warmly invite you to join the Street Photography Club Basel. Founded to bring together local and visiting photographers, the club organizes regular photo walks, exhibitions, and community projects. It’s a space to sharpen your eye, share your work, and experience the city in new and unexpected ways.
