Writer's picture: Thomas HalfmannThomas Halfmann

The Maag event hall in Zürich has become the fortunate host to one of the most breathtaking exhibitions of recent times - "Amazonia" by the renowned Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Set in the industry style halls of the Maag Halle, this exhibition takes visitors on an immersive and visually arresting journey through the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Beyond being a celebration of Salgado's photographic mastery, "Amazonia" serves as a powerful reminder of the environmental importance of this endangered region.

Sebastião Salgado's photographic work has long been celebrated for its ability to evoke deep emotions and tell compelling stories. With "Amazonia," he once again showcases his unparalleled talent in capturing the raw beauty of nature and the intimate connections between humans and their environment. Each photograph is a masterpiece, meticulously composed to convey a profound sense of intimacy with the subjects and landscapes he encountered during his years of exploration in the Amazon.

Through his lens, Salgado brings to life the diverse array of life forms that inhabit the Amazon rainforest. From majestic landscape and nature motifs to remote indigenous communities living in harmony with their surroundings, his photographs reveal the astonishing biodiversity and cultural richness of this vital ecosystem. The sheer magnificence of his images can leave spectators in awe while also stirring a sense of responsibility to protect and preserve such irreplaceable wonders.

However, "Amazonia" is not merely a collection of aesthetically pleasing photographs; it serves a higher purpose. The exhibition acts as a call to action, urging viewers to recognize the critical environmental importance of the Amazon rainforest and the urgency of conserving it for future generations. Salgado's images not only showcase the beauty of the Amazon but also unveil the devastating effects of deforestation, illegal logging, and encroachment by human activities.

The Amazon rainforest, often referred to as "the lungs of the Earth," plays a vital role in regulating the planet's climate and biodiversity. Its vast canopy absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, making it a crucial ally in the fight against global warming. By exposing the Amazon's fragility and the threats it faces, Salgado's exhibition serves as a powerful reminder that we must act collectively and decisively to protect this invaluable ecosystem.

As I wandered through the exhibition, I found myself in awe of Sebastião Salgado's dedication to his craft and his unwavering commitment to environmental conservation. His ability to capture moments of both serenity and struggle within the Amazon rainforest is unparalleled. It is a privilege to witness his work and to stand in solidarity with his cause.

For many years Sebastião Salgado is one of my favourite photographers and idols. I have several of his books in my collection and visited all exhibition of his work whenever they were in a place close to me. I deeply enjoy his body of work not only because he photographing only in black & white, but also due to the human cause that is represented by his photography.

I wholeheartedly recommend visiting the "Amazonia" exhibition to anyone who appreciates art, photography, and the importance of environmental conservation. Sebastião Salgado's photographs will leave you mesmerized, but more importantly, they will inspire you to become an advocate for the preservation of our planet's most precious resources. This exhibition is a visual testament to the urgency of protecting the Amazon rainforest and a call to action for every individual to contribute in any way they can.

Sebastião Salgado's "Amazonia" exhibition is an extraordinary display of artistry and environmental advocacy. It is a vivid reminder of the interconnectedness between humans and nature and the urgency of preserving our planet's most delicate ecosystems.
