Bet-ha-Chajim (Houses of Life)

Jüdische Friedhöfe im Ländlichen Franken (Deutschland)

There are about 100 Jewish cemeteries in all of Franconia. These "Houses of Life" as they are called in Hebrew still hold testimony to past Jewish communities.

Jewish communities have nearly compltely disappeared  in Franconia because of the persecution of the Jews in the Third Reich.

The Hebrew and German inscriptions on the graves provide information on the lives of the people buried there, their families and the history of the Jewish communities in Franconia. However, many of these inscriptions are hardly readable anymore. This is an ongoing project about these "Houses of Life" as part of the communities and the landscape in rural Franconia.
